SILPHIUM
A modern reimagining of antiquity’s most precious aromatic plant—a legendary scent harvested into extinction.
Fragrance Story
SILPHIUM is Stora Skuggan’s interpretation of a scent lost to history. By studying plants believed to be surviving relatives and combining their characteristics with modern aroma molecules, the fragrance imagines what this legendary botanical treasure might once have smelled like. The reconstructed accord is surrounded by ancient incense, woods and leather, creating an aromatic bridge between classical antiquity and contemporary perfumery—a speculative portrait of a fragrance the world can no longer experience.
Inspiration
SILPHIUM resurrects the legend of one of the ancient world’s most prized—and mysterious—plants. Growing wild along the coast of Cyrene in present-day Libya, silphium was celebrated throughout Greek and Roman antiquity as a spice, medicine and perfume ingredient. Attempts to cultivate it repeatedly failed, making the limited wild supply extraordinarily valuable. Relentless demand eventually led to its extinction, taking its true aroma and flavor with it and leaving behind only fragments of historical description.
